3.HIV、AIDS

In Cooperation of teacher in the school, the first lesson on HIV and AIDS was organised at a Primary School on 5th March 2009.
Although the day was the day before the national Independence Day and pupils had to practice marching, teachers helped to manage the time.
This was the first time to teach them about HIV and AIDS, so the talk was focus on basic knowledge of HIV and AIDS.
The lesson was just one hour and in order to achieve the goals, the lesson was held interactively during the most of the time in the class and the pupils were actively taking part of answering the questions.
For a better understanding, we tried team teaching, but still some words or sentence and the way to describe the body or disease in English seems to be difficult for some students. So maybe even it is in school, sometimes it is needed to be translated to local language especially difficult words or on some sensitive topics.
Some exercise made pupils get excited but that made them just had fun rather than learning.
The knowledge and intention of behaviour change is slightly improved, but on some issues which might not emphasised well or didn’t explain well got worse.
It is not easy to tell or teach something to somebody, better way to make student understand is needed to be investigated.
Before the lesson was taken, I thought primary 6 might be to deal with sexual issue, but according to the questionnaire, half of them are sexually active, so following up and comprehensive approach on Education of Sexual health and reproductive health should be continue in the same school and in other schools in the district.
Achievement
-Good cooperation with school and teachers
-The knowledge and intention of behaviour change slightly improved
-Pupils actively took part
-Pupils found the lesson interesting and good according to questionnaire
Challenges
-The time is limited
-Lack of language skill of JOCV
-Lack of English knowledge of pupils
Way forward
-Clarify and simplify the key points
-Emphasise and repeat important points
-More explain on some difficult words and sentence
-More use of pictures and movies
-Get more attractive for who is not participating well or not understanding well
-Continue follow up
